How Seasonal Maintenance Saves You Money

That’s right. I am going to demonstrate how a small investment will pay homeowners back almost immediately. I’ll use a personal story to make my point.

My home is about 15 years old and it seems like every time I turn around something is breaking down – be it the water heater, refrigerator or dishwasher. The day finally came when we broke down and bought a new dishwasher, since the old one just wasn’t getting the job done.

I am a big believer in the old saying, “You get what you pay for.” So I did my due diligence by going on the internet to look up reviews on dishwashers and found a unit that had everything my wife and I needed.

After we took it home and removed the packaging, I was surprised at what I saw – plastic, lots and lots of it. The old unit weighed twice as much as the one I was installing, which made me question how good this dishwasher would be. Even though the new unit was rated high in reviews from reputable sources like Consumer Reports, I could tell this dishwasher was not going to last as long as our last one did.

So what is my point? Ten years ago when we would install a new heating or air conditioning system in a home, I was usually asked the question, “Do I need to have this unit serviced every year?” My normal reply would have been to wait about five years and then give us a call. Flash forward to today and this is no longer the case.

Vertex Mechanical uses equipment that has held the No. 1 or No. 2 spot by Consumer Reports for the past several years. I can personally attest to the fact that we have seen a much higher performance and reliability from this brand than some of its leading competitors.

Despite its high performance rating, the fact remains equipment built today is not the same as 20 years ago. Even the top manufacturers are cutting corners to remain competitive – and that means less durability and reliability.

This is why I recommend annual maintenance checks on all new equipment we install. So how does this annual investment save you money? Here are some ways you will save by investing in annual maintenance:

  1. Energy Star and Texas A&M studies show systems that are not properly charged with refrigerant can drop by 5 to 20 percent in efficiency. If an average system is costing you $100 a month to operate, ensuring your charge is correct can save you up to $20 a month. This alone can pay for the service.
  2. Dirty coils can contribute to high energy bills and shorter life expectancy of the unit. Any dirt that makes it past your filter will be caught in the coil and can build up over several years.
  3. Filters have been a big problem over the years. We have customers who think they are doing the right thing by buying expensive filters, but what they are really doing is compromising their system and running up high utility bills. Our technicians can tell you what filter works best for your unit, as all systems are unique.

My advice is to get on a plan with your heating and cooling contractor. Many service plans will give you discounts on system upgrades or offer you money back on any additional services you might need. If you have any questions, please call us today!
