Air Conditioning - System Upgrades / Replacements

If it's time to upgrade or replace your system, there are some key things to keep in mind. This is the time to deal with hot/cold spots in your home. Question. You have a two story home that is always 10 degree’s behind. What needs to be done?

a. put in a larger system
b. put in a smaller system
c. make no changes
d. sell the home because it can't be fixed

System UpgradesDid you say a? This is how most people would answer and even many of the commission sales people will say the same, however they could very well be wrong. To find the correct answer, the first thing Vertex will do is a load calculation on your home. In many cases, we will find that the unit in your home is already oversized. This means that the unit is not running long enough to circulate to the hard to reach rooms. By sizing the system properly you will find that on a 90 degree day, your unit will run most of the time. This will help circulation to those hard to reach areas. Now the big question. Will this increased run time make your electric bill high? No it won't.

Long run times on a system can be explained using this analogy: Consider a car that is driving on the turnpike vs. a car in the city. The car on the turnpike gets better mileage because it has less stops and starts. You will find that your properly sized system also has less stops and starts and is therefore much more energy and cost efficient.
